artist's statement

I work in a direction I call 'visual autobiography,' starting with family photographs, snapshots, group pictures, and formal portraits. I am interested in the passage of time and the notion that the photograph can freeze that time. I am exploring family relationships and aging, plus honoring family members who have died, reflecting on my past, and imagining where the future may lead. I hope the finished pieces resonate with viewers who may see their own past reflected in my images.

My technique varies considerably, depending on the conceived piece. I copy or scan family photographs and make reproductions from the copies. I make multiple prints on photographic paper, print positive enlargements on film, and reproduce images on non-traditional surfaces such as wallpaper. Some of the prints and films are then collaged, combined with fiber, made into a grid, or torn and reassembled. I also use alternatve photographic processes such as the cyanotype and Van Dyke brown, and print on art paper.

My aesthetic influences are photographers Wendy Synder MacNeil, Rober Heinecken, Ken Josephson, and Judy Golden, plus multi-media artists Annette Messager and Christian Boltanski.
